Poor Henry's Almanac--Shepherd-Simpson Bible Study Class

Vol. IV, # 14, Nov. 11, 2005

Can You Believe That Shepson Beth Is A Grandmother?

The young college student who allegedly once perceived Teacher Bob as the Devil's Advocate is now a grandmother. Beth's words which follow report the facts:

"As you can imagine, I am absolutely thrilled. The little baby wasn't due until December 22 so she was a bit of a surprise. She was born Monday morning at 1:04 and weighed 4 lb. 12 oz. Her name is Ella Sofia. Mother and baby came home today. Can you imagine? Only ONE DAY in the hospital! Times have certainly changed."

Love,

Beth

Prayer Rounds

Don Thomson remains hospitalized, but his pain is being better managed. Kathy Wade sent the following message regarding her treatment:

"I'm doing very well, even though the shots sound not so good...they're actually a precaution. The overall goal, of course, is an "all clear."

My job is still going quite well. I've started writing two different company newsletters so that's been fun. Keeps me writing. I'm still doing English as a Second Language (in my fifth year now) at a church just down the way from our business. We teach on Tuesday nights. I now teach second graders in Sunday School at my church in Shawnee. I absolutely love that. I'm a children's teacher from way back so it's a real privilege to be with these kids every week. Even though our choir is quite small, our new part-time music minister is really trying to shape up the group. Because of my horrendous schedule, I can only sing in the summer with them when our ESL program is on summer break. Besides, it's very easy for me to unfairly compare the music program with River Road. In fact I don't know of a church in Shawnee that could even hold a candle to RRCB's program. They have all these mega churches in Oklahoma City with fabulous programs, so that is the price of living in a rural area.

I really enjoy PHA and then click on the church's Web site to see what is happening. It sounds like Mike Clingenpeel is such a wonderful fit with the church."

Blessings,

Kathy

Jeanette Gholston is improving and was able to attend church last Sunday.

Remember in your prayers: Baby girl Ella Sofia and her mother, Don Thomson, Edye Stolz, Don Bunn, Kathy Wade, the RRCB Micah Team, CrossOver West Clinic, Drew Llewellyn, Jeanette Gholston, Kay and Bob Culpepper, Philip and Shanna Davis, the VCU BSU, Julia Tyler and her parents, the youth of the church, the Church clergy, the church staff and all of the mission efforts of RRCB. Prayers should also be offered for all those who have lost loved ones or material possessions as a result of Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma, as well as prayers for our men and women in the armed forces, civilians around the world in harm's way and for those only known to you. Also, on this special day, remember all of our veterans in your prayers.

How Did Bathsheba Get Her Name?

Donald Deer sent PH one of his time honored replies.

Henry,

You know why she was called Bathsheba?

Because when David first saw her, she was taking a bath.

What Will Happen to David and Bathsheba's New Born Son?

Come to the SSBSC Elizabeth B Wilson (Granny) Multipurpose Municipal Auditorium this Sunday and Teacher Bob will likely tell us more than we can imagine

No Shepson Birthdays this Week

There are no Shepson birthdays this week, but long time Sunday School teacher Connie Showalter has a birthday tomorrow.

Words of Martin Luther

Discipleship is not limited to what you can understand – it must transcend all comprehension. Plunge into the deep waters beyond your own understanding, and I will help you to comprehend.

Bewilderment is the true comprehension. Not to know where you are going is the true knowledge. In this way Abraham went forth from his father, not knowing where he was going. That is the way of the cross. You cannot find it in yourself, so you must let me lead you as though you were a blind man.

Not the work which you choose, not the suffering you devise, but the road which is contrary to all that you choose or contrive or desire – that is the road you must take. It is to this path that I call you, and in this sense that you must be my disciple.

Source: Martin Luther (1483-1546), quoted in Dietrich Bonhoeffer, "The Cost of Discipleship."
