Shepsons Charlotte and Bill Report
17,186
DIAPERS IN SEVEN ISH CAMPAIGNS! WOW!!
River Road Church families contributed 3,181 diapers
to Interfaith Services of Henrico (ISH) during a month-long campaign
in May. That gift brings to 17,186 the number of diapers our church
has provided ISH since 2000:
May-June 2000 - 1,901
May-July 2001 - 1,974
May 2002 - 3,137
May 2003 - 2,692
May 2004 - 2,517
October 2004 - 1,784
May 2005 - 3,181
17,186 is definitely a lot of diapers. If you take
that many diapers, assuming that the average length of each when
extended is eighteen inches, and place them end-to-end, you will
have a line of diapers 25,779 feet long.
How long is 25,779 feet? How about 4.9 miles! To
walk, drive or fly 4.9 miles, start at River Road Church, head up
Ridge Road to Forest Avenue, turn left at Skipwith Road, left again
at West Broad Street, tipping your hat to Shoneys as you pass
it. Turn right onto West End Drive and quit when you reach the West
Tower Theatre. You deserve a break today.
Thanks, everyone!
Next ISH campaign: School Supplies, July 15-August
15.
Norm Vaughn's Mother Expires
PH received word that Norm's mother was declining
last Saturday. Norm wrote the following series of E-mails this past
week:
"We received a call yesterday evening that
my mother, Edna Vaughn, has "begun the final process of dying."
The hospice people are with her, and someone is with her 24 hours
a day. She's in a nursing home, Life Care Center of Orlando, and
is 94 years old. We're leaving around noon today, and will drive
to Orlando."
"Apparently
not much change in my mother's condition overnight. I spoke with
the nurse this morning and the hospice people are still with her.
We made it as far as Brunswick, GA Saturday night and should be
in Orlando by noon Sunday."
"This is double-notification for some of
you, I realize, but didn't want to leave anyone out. We are trying
to schedule a graveside service for 11:00 am Thursday at Glen
Haven Memorial Park, 2300 Temple Drive, Winter Park, Fl.
Thanks to all you dear friends for your prayers and concerns."
Norm
And later came an E-mail from Norm and Jane's daughter
Linda Schreiner:
Dear Friends,
"I am writing to tell you that my grandmother,
Edna Vaughn, passed away this morning at 9:00 a.m. My father and
mother were able to spend time with her during the past few days
before her time on this earth was complete. Funeral arrangements
are being made right now. I will confirm the exact details as
soon as possible. Arrangements will be handled by:
Collison Family Funeral Home
Howell Branch Chapel
Winter Park, FL
407-678-4500
We appreciate your prayers and support. I ask
for your continued prayers for my father.."
Sincerely,
Linda

Wednesday. All of these Shepsons were born twenty-nine years ago
in 1976 when our country was almost two hundred years old. Also
John and Jessica Vaughan were married ten years ago today.
At
the last Tuesday Night Club Meeting Teacher Bob was bustling with
confidence that we will reach Second Samuel before the Catacombs
start on July 10. We are about to get into chapter 30 of First Samuel,
but the reader probably should review the last few verses of chapter
29. PH is sure that Teacher Bob has made a committed prediction,
but something like a Second Coming could slow us up and plunge us
into a new era of the New Testament.
PH has a copy of a booklet entitled Truthfully
Speaking, which is dated April 2005. The booklet is published
by the Virginia Baptist Mission
Board from donations designated for printing and distribution. In
this booklet Executive Director John Upton and Treasurer Eddie Stratton
respond to many questions, especially politically sensitive questions.
In this booklet Upton and Stratton state that the BGAV opposes a
woman's right to choose abortion, states that a homosexual life
style is unacceptable for Christians and seemed to oppose academic
freedom at Averatt University. Upton and Stratton reported that
the BGAV did not affirm the 2000 SBC Baptist Faith and Message and
did not confirm Biblical inerrancy.
PH: This booklet seems to be a defensive document
to answer questions raised by Southern Baptist Conservatives of
Virginia. Any of you may request a copy of this document by calling
Kay McMeniman in Support Services at the Virginia Baptist Mission
Board (800-255-2428) or you can read the document on the VBMB's
website at http://www.vbmb.org/.
The document is entitled Truthfully Speaking. What happened
to the priesthood of all believers and soul freedom?
Last
Tuesday night a little bit of trivial pursuit occurred sparked by
conversations at the Tuesday Night Club. With help from Richmond
Historian Emily King and the Internet, PH learned some interesting
facts. The Richmond Colts of the old Piedmont League played their
home games at Tate Field on Mayo Island from 1920 to 1940. This
baseball field was closed in 1940 due to damage from flooding on
the James River. Eddie Mooer, owner of the Colts, moved the team
to the newly constructed Moore's Field in Scott's Addition in 1941.
In a preseason exhibition game played on Mayo Island's Tate Field
between the Yankees and the Dodgers (Brooklyn) in 1922, Babe Ruth
of the Yankees hit a home run that went beyond the park and bounced
into a railroad coal car and the ball went hundreds of miles away
on that coal car. Thus, this became the legend of the longest home
run in baseball history and it happened right here in Richmond in
a downtown ball park. Babe Ruth played on one other occasion at
Tate Field in 1932 in an exhibition game between the Yankees and
the Colts.
Who was this Tate that Tate Field got its name?
Edward Christopher Tate was born in Richmond on December 22, 1860,
and died in Richmond on June 25, 1932. He made his major league
baseball debut on September 26, 1885. He played for the Boston Beaneaters
from 1885 to 1889. He played for the Baltimore Orioles from 1889
to October 15, 1890. He was also known as Dimples Tate and Pop Tate.
He batted right and threw left. He was 5 feet - ten inches tall
and weighed 178 pounds.
Attached to this PHA is a small
photo of some of the stands at Tate Field. You may have to enlarge
the photo to see your ancestors.
PH has a little book entitled Day by Day with
John Calvin. The entry for June 3 reads:
The Heart Is Deceitful
The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond
cure. Who can understand it? I the Lord search the heart and examine
the mind, to reward a man according to his conduct, according
to what his deeds deserve - Jeremiah 17 : 9 - 10
What
is taught here depends on what is said before in the chapter,
and therefore they ought to be read together. Jeremiah's declaration
that all who trust in the flesh are cursed, that we can expect
no blessing unless we rely on God, ought to have been sufficient
to move his hearers. But when he saw that this wasn't enough,
he added, I see how it is - the heart is deceitful above
all things - so you who think yourselves so clever that you can
deceive God and his ministers, I,' says Jehovah, I
will search and examine the mind, for it belongs to me to examine
the hearts of men.'
Grant, Almighty God, that because we are wholly
nothing and less than nothing, we may know our nothingness And
having cast away all confidence in the world as well as in ourselves,
we may learn to come to you suppliant and put our trust in you
for our present life and for our eternal salvation so that you
alone will be glorified. And may we be devoted to you through
the whole course of our life, and so persevere in humility and
in calling on your name, that you may not only for once bring
us help, but that we may know that you are always present with
those who truly and from the heart call upon you - until we shall
at length be filled with the fullness of all those blessings which
are laid up for us in heaven by Christ our Lord. Amen
PH
