Vol. 2, # 38, April 30, 2004
In response to last week's PHA, Shepson Doris Curtis wrote to
PH and to the readers of PHA the following.
Dear Poor Henry -
Absolutely no truth to either the rapture report or the disclosure
of the identity of the new pastor - the identity would have to
be known to be disclosed. However, if I were to trust anyone with
the information, it would be dear Brenda. You men are so impatient
- the PSC moves ever closer but is not yet there. Stay tuned .
. . By the way, another wonderful PHA - as always.
Doris-
Poor Henry responded to this Red
Alert with the following to Doris:
WOW!
Doris,
A Red Alert sent out to the readers of PHA is a
history making event in the annals of PHA. Is this denial similar
to: "I
did not have sex with that woman" or "We know that Saddam
has weapons of mass destruction?" The key to this advance
notice was the "Shepson Rapture." Because God knows the
identity of the new pastor and PH was hoping that the rapture provided
you with fore knowledge. PH is sad to learn that you were apparently
left behind also.
H (Poor)
And Doris responded with:
Oh Henry
You are just too cute . . . a rapture would not
be rapturous without Brenda and me. I only wrote in red because
I am ever trying to
find "my" e-mail color and red seemed to fit this morning.
Now, I am doing a deep maroon. Anyway, it did get me a couple of
e-mails from Shepsons who wondered why they were still here if
there had been a rapture. Sorry if the red seemed too red. What
do you think of the maroon? See you soon - rapture or not!
Saradoris
PH Conclusion: Poor Henry went from being an impatient man to
being cute. And Brenda became rapturous. And rapture is defined
as:
a. a state or experience of being carried away by overwhelming
emotion
b: a mystical experience in which the spirit is exalted to a knowledge
of divine things, an expression or manifestation of ecstasy or
passion (PH likes this one)
PH was once again the recipient of bad intelligence regarding
the next time the Children's Choir will sing during a worship service.
Last week PH informed readers that the children would sing on Mother's
Day. However, recent information, declassified by Margaret Phelps,
indicates that the children will sing on Sunday, May 23. If this
proves to be bad intelligence PH will voluntarily appear before
the Music Committee, but only if Teacher Bob goes with PH.
Shepson Terry Marsh's mother expired yesterday afternoon. Terry
wrote:
"Mom died late this afternoon (Thursday). Arrangements at St Peters
Morristown pending. Will let you know."
Terry
It was a delight for all of us to see Kay and Bob Culpepper back
in our class last Sunday. PH learned that Kay drove their car and
they arrived on time.
Alana Woolley had surgery last week and a large tumor was removed.
She is recovering at St. Mary's Hospital.
Remember in your prayers Terry Marsh and his family, Alana Woolley,
Donald Deer, Rick and Linda Mears, Mary and Julian Pentecost, Nancy
and George Werner, Kay and Bob Culpepper, John and Margaret Oliver,
Dot and Cecil Sherman, the Church staff, the Pastor's Search Committee,
the Executive Committee, our military and civilians in harm's way,
and those only known to you.
John 19.12
exinde quaerebat Pilatus dimittere eum Iudaei
autem clamabant dicentes
si hunc dimittis non es amicus Caesaris omnis qui se regem facit
contradicit Caesari (Vulgate)
And from henceforth Pilate sought to release
him. But the Jews cried
out, saying: If thou release this man, thou art not Caesar's
friend.
For whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.
(Douay-Rheims)
And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release
him: but the Jews cried
out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend:
whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar. (KJV)
From then on Pilate sought to release Him, but
the Jews cried out,
saying, "If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar's friend.
Whoever
makes himself a king speaks against Caesar." (NKJV)
Upon this Pilate sought to release him: but the
Jews cried out, saying,
If thou release this man, thou art not Caesar's friend: every
one that
maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar. (ASV)
As a result of this Pilate made efforts to release
Him, but the Jews
cried out saying, "If you release this Man, you are no friend
of
Caesar; everyone who makes himself out to be a king opposes Caesar." (NASB-rev.)
Upon this Pilate sought to release him, but the
Jews cried out, "If
you
release this man, you are not Caesar's friend; every one who
makes
himself a king sets himself against Caesar." (RSV)
From then on Pilate tried to release him, but the
Jews cried out, "If
you release this man, you are no friend of the emperor. Everyone
who
claims to be a king sets himself against the emperor." (NRSV)
From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free,
but the Jews kept shouting, "If you let this man go, you
are no friend of Caesar. Anyone
who claims to be a king opposes Caesar." (NIV)
Consequently, Pilate tried to release him; but
the Jews cried out, "If
you release him, you are not a Friend of Caesar. Everyone who
makes himself a king opposes Caesar." (NAB)
From that moment Pilate was anxious to set him
free, but the Jews shouted, 'If you set him free you are no
friend of Caesar's; anyone
who
makes himself king is defying Caesar.' (NJB)
From that moment Pilate tried hard to release
him; but the Jews kept
shouting, ‘If you let this man go, you are no friend to
Caesar; anyone
who claims to be a king is opposing Caesar.’ (REB)

When Pilate heard this, he tried to find a way to set Jesus free.
But
the crowd shouted back, "If you set him free, that means
that you are
not the Emperor's friend! Anyone who claims to be a king is a
rebel
against the Emperor!" (GNB)
Then Pilate wanted to set Jesus free. But the crowd
again yelled, "If
you set this man free, you are no friend of the Emperor! Anyone
who
claims to be a king is an enemy of the Emperor." (CEV)

"
THE JEWS" IN THE GOSPEL OF JOHN
by Robert G. Bratcher
(Reprinted from Practical Papers for the Bible Translator 26, October
1975, pages 401–409.)
. . .
Pilate questions Jesus again, and he replies that his kingdom
is not of
this world: if it were of this world, his followers would have
fought
to keep him from being handed over to "the Jews." Here,
if there is any
distinction, the authorities are meant. Then Pilate goes out
and
addresses "the Jews." It seems probable that here,
and for the rest of
the section, the expression is not restricted to the authorities,
but
includes the hostile crowd as well. (Notice that in 18.35 Pilate
tells
Jesus, "Your own people and the chief priests handed you over
to me.")
The chief priests and the temple guards are referred to in 19.6,
and
the chief priests in 19.16. After the trial Pilate
. . .
Summary
According to this review, "the Jews" in the Gospel
of John may have
four different meanings:
(1) its natural sense, meaning simply Jewish people: 2.6,13;
3.1,25; 4.9,22; 5.1; 6.4; 7.2; 8.31; 11.55; 18.12,35; 19.21,40,42;
(2) Judeans, people who live in and near Jerusalem:
11.8,19,31,33,36,45,54; 12.9,11; 19.20;
(3) people hostile to Jesus: 6.41,52; 8.48,52,57; 10.19,24,31,33;
18.20,38; 19.7,12,14;
(4) the authorities in Jerusalem: 1.19; 2.18,20; 5.10,15,16,18;
7.1,11,13,15,35; 8.22; 9.18,22; 13.33; 18.14,31,36; 19.31,38;
20.19.

Then Pilate tried to release him, but the Jewish leaders told him, "If
you release this man, you are not a friend of Caesar. Anyone
who
declares himself a king is a rebel against Caesar." (NLT)
From this point on Pilate tried to release him.
But the Jewish religious leaders* shouted out, "If you
release this man, you are no
friend of Caesar! Everyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar!" (NET)
*Grk "the Jews." Here the phrase
refers to the Jewish religious
leaders, especially members of the Sanhedrin, and their servants
(mentioned specifically as "the chief priests and their servants" in
John 19:6).
From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free,
but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, "If you let this
man go, you are no friend of Caesar.
Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar." (Today's
New International Version)

PH: Aren't you glad that we cover one verse at a time? And sometimes
more than one verse on any given Sunday.
Shepson Missionaries Charlotte and Bill remind us of our next
local mission project for ISH.
ISH DIAPERS/EMERGENCY CERTIFICATES CAMPAIGN
River Road Church will sponsor its annual diapers and emergency
certificates campaign on behalf of Interfaith Services of Henrico
(ISH) from May 1-31.
Diapers for children? Yes. Diapers for adults? Yes, this year for
the first time. Emergency certificates? Yes.
Sue Hodder will coordinate the campaign.
Contributions may be brought to the Shepherd-Simpson Bible Study
Class on Sunday mornings in May or to the church office during
the week.

The
Spire indicated that Teacher Bob will "reach" John
19:16 this Sunday. If this is literally true, then we will not
get Jesus on the cross this Sunday. But never underestimate Teacher
Bob; Jesus could be lifted up in early May.
All Shepsons ARE twenty-nine. Joining this group of twenty-nine
year olds on Sunday are Doug Moyers and honorary Shepson Lee Slatton.
The Honeymooners, Kitty and Miller Alvis, will celebrate thirty-two
years of marriage on next Thursday.
All of us know about Anne Frank. Her diary survived and as a result
her story survived. One of Anne's girlfriends was Hannah Pick-Goslar.
Ms. Pick-Goslar told her memories of Anne to Alison Leslie Gold
who wrote a little book on Hannah's memories of Anne. A note in
the book by Hannah Pick-Goslar reads:
"This story about my youthful friend Anne
Frank and myself is an important story for children as well as
for adults. But to
go through this painful remembrance again and again, and tell about
this awful time, I had to have a reason.
Anne wrote in her diary on November 27, 1943, about me. She asked
why should I (Anne Frank) be chosen to live and she (Hannah Goslar)
probably to die? Ironically the opposite came true. Now I am a
happy grandmother in Israel, and it was Anne who died. Because
of this irony I feel obliged to tell as much as I can about Anne
Frank. Anne wanted to be famous and to live on after her death.
By telling what I remember, perhaps I can add a little to her fame,
though Anne never would how dreamed how famous she is now.
After a long time I've tried to remember things as exactly as
possible, but Anne and I were friends beginning over sixty years
ago and it is hard to remember everything exactly. Sometimes I
can remember exact words and sometimes I can't. If I had known
that Anne would be famous, I'd have tried to remember her better.
At the time of our childhoods she really was a girl like other
girls her age, only her development was much quicker and her writing
very mature.
I once asked our late headmistress, Mrs. Kuperus,
if she had seen something special in Anne. It was her opinion
that a child who
you close off from the world, from her friends, from nature, from
flowers, from animals, from everything, who lives under such unreal
circumstances with people older than herself, like Anne did while
in hiding, will develop much quicker than in regular circumstances.
Perhaps she was right."
PH would agree with Mrs. Kuperus. Having experienced an unreal
circumstance with polio and knowing many others with the same experience,
one does grow up and mature faster by necessity. It would seem
that the Resurrection caused a distinct change with the eleven
disciples after an unreal circumstance. Attached to this PHA is
a photo of Anne Frank (kneeling) and Hannah Goslar (standing) in
May 1939.
