Thirteen Shepsons dared to take the SSBSC 2003 Trivia
Quiz. Most took the quiz while celebrating on New Year's Eve. A
few others submitted their answers via E-mail. Scores ranged from
a low of 41 to a high of 94. Each question was worth ten points
and the extra
credit question was worth another ten points; thus, it was possible
to score 110 on this quiz. The average score on the quiz was 69.
In high school PH believes this is still a failing grade. Even in
most colleges this score would be a D. PH assumes that those Shepsons
who took the quiz were probably more confident than those who did
not. Below is the quiz with the correct answers.
PH's 2003 Trivia Quiz (Cheating was encouraged but
did not seem to help.)
1. Name the books of the Bible that Teacher Bob
taught this year?
a. John b. Exodus c. Thomas d. Mary e. Gospel of Judas
The correct answer is John. Some Shepsons thought
we studied both Exodus and John in 2003.
2. Which chapter of the gospel of John were we studying
this time last year?
a. Chapter 1 b. Chapter 2 c. Chapter 3. d. Chapter 4 e. None of
abcd
Last year on January 1 we were studying chapter
4 of John. The answers were all over the place, but a few got the
correct answer.
3. Who wrote Tillich and World Religions?
a. Ray Brown b. Paul Tillich c. Pat Robertson d. Rob James e. Cher
Everyone got this one correct. Rob James wrote Tillich
and World Religions and presented a three-lesson overview of
his book in July.
4. Did Teacher Bob finish John, Chapter 14 last
Sunday?
a. Yes b. No c. Unsure d. Probably e. Never
Teacher Bob announced on Sunday, December 28, 2003,
that we had completed chapter 14 of John. The correct answer was
a. Those who chose "never" could probably argue their
point with some enthusiasm, but to no avail with PH
5. How many issues of Poor Henry's Almanac have
been published?
a. 52 b. 72 c. 71 e. 666 e. 3:16
Volume 1 of PHA had 52 issues and the PHA of 12/26/03
was # 20 of Volume 2; thus the correct answer was 72. Some actually
thought that there had only been 52 issues.
6. Number the following in order of their birth
(oldest to youngest)
Wayland Andrews Jesus John the Bapt. Herod the Great Beloved disciple
Most Shepsons got this one right. The correct order
is Herod the Great, John the Baptist, Jesus, Beloved disciple, and
Wayland Andrews
7. Who was William Whitsett?
a. Confederate soldier b. A Baptist c. U of R professor d. Southern
Seminary President e. All of the abcd.
William Whitsett was all of abc and d; thus the
correct answer was e. Amazingly most got this one correct. Jim Slatton
told all this when he taught our class in July.
8. Draw lines between the matches in columns 1 and
column 2
| Rob James |
|
Super menu |
| Gene Damon |
|
Joe the Beagle |
| Donna Brown |
|
Roman slavery |
| Terry Marsh |
|
Paul Tillich |
| Miller Alvis |
|
Big Brother |
Rob James matches with Paul Tillich (Rob's book
on Tillich); Gene Damon matches with Roman slavery (Gene's lecture
on Roman society); Donna Brown matches with super menu (Donna's
menu for CARITAS); Terry Marsh matches with Big Brother (Terry was
named Big Brother of the year); and Miller Alvis matches with Joe
the Beagle (Miller's dog). Most Shepsons got these correct, but
the only one that was universally correct was Miller and Joe.
9. More matchings
| Choir members |
|
Franklin, Kay, Dorcas |
| Missionaries |
|
Miller, Charlotte, Beth |
| Educators |
|
Sheila, Bob, Terry |
| Lawyers |
|
Ed, John, Julia |
| Saints |
|
Carole, Terry, Brenda |
Choir members matches with
Carole, Terry and Brenda; Missionaries matches with Franklin, Kay,
and Dorcas (all three are retired missionaries); Educators matches
with Ed, John and Julia (Ed Pruden, Julia Tyler and John Gordon
are full time educators); Lawyers matches with Sheila, Bob and Terry
(no one matched them with saints); and Saints matches with Miller,
Charlotte, and Beth. Some thought that Franklin, Kay and Dorcas
were the saints and Miller, Charlotte and Beth were missionaries.
One could argue this point, but PH showed no mercy.
10. Name Pastor Cecil's favorite saying?
a. Point one b. Point two c. Point three d. Cross-eyed Jackass
e. Final point
Any of the choices above were considered correct,
but Final point was the most popular choice.
Extra Credit: Name one of Barbara Massey's favorite
TV shows.
Only one Shepson got a correct extra credit answer.
Barbara told PH months ago that her favorite TV shows were "Cops"
and the "Judge" shows. Two Shepsons thought that her favorite
TV show was NBC's Dateline with Sara James. Who possibly would have
thought this?
ISH
DUFFEL BAG CAMPAIGN OFF TO A GREAT START! Thirteen of our goal of
36 duffel bags were claimed in the first week of the campaign, which
began January 1st and will run through January 31st. That is especially
encouraging for an effort, which ISH annually considers to be one
of its most urgent needs. Thanks, everyone!
Shepsons Beth Wilson and Don Thomson request prayers
for loved ones:
Could
you please add a name to our prayer list? Her name is Carmella
Bond. She is a 30-year-old new mother who has just been diagnosed
with a brain tumor. (She is the daughter of a very dear friend
of David's mother-in-law.) Thanks so much!!
Beth
Vonda Thomson's youngest brother, Durell Ashlock,
from Tennessee, is visiting Vonda and Don on Monday and driving
down with Vonda on Tuesday to stay with a sister in Urbanna for
several days. He has cancer of the nose. Following his visit in
Virginia, he will return to Tennessee to have his nose removed and
a new nose built at the University of Vanderbilt Medical School.
Vonda and Don have asked that Durell be added to the class's prayer
list.
Remember in your prayers Carmella Bond, Durell Ashlock,
Kay and Bob Culpepper, John and Margaret Oliver, Donald Deer, Julia
Tyler's parents, Dot and Cecil Sherman, Chester's parents, the Church
staff, the Pastor's Search Committee, the Denominational Affairs
Committee, our military in harm's way, the least among us (especially
those fellow citizens who are homeless) and those only known to
you.
Shepson
Doris Curtis and Honorary Shepson Jim Slatton will be twenty-nine
on next Thursday. Nancy Werner will reach the same age on next Friday.
Vonda and Don Thomson will celebrate nine years of wedded bliss
on next Wednesday and Sheila and Terry Marsh will do the same on
that Wednesday except they will celebrate twenty years of bliss
and kiss.
Under His Wings
As the eagle must force her young
From the nest to teach them how to fly,
So our Father must press us out of
Routine to the things He'd have us try.
And just as the eagle guards her own
To insure their safety in flight,
Our Lord is near when we try our wings,
We're never out of His sight.
But should the eagle begin to fall,
The eagle swoops down from above
To rescue its young and bear it up
On wings of strength and love.
So how can we doubt that the eagle's
Creator, the One Who made us all,
If we should start to fall?
(Author Unknown, but given to PH by Shepson Vonda)
Last week we learned that the Southern Baptist Convention
(SBC) will likely withdraw its membership in the Baptist World Alliance
(BWA). Among the past presidents of the BWA were Richmond's Theodore
Adams and Shepson Ed. Pruden's father. What is the reason?
The most likely reason is that the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship
(CBF) will be allowed membership in the BWA. At the rate the SBC
is becoming more exclusivist, it is just a matter of time before
the SBC will not permit a church to be dually aligned with the SBC
and the CBF as RRCB currently is. At present the majority of our
church mission budget goes to cooperative mission efforts. Two-thirds
of our church's special mission offerings go to cooperative mission
causes with about one-third going to the Lottie Moon offering which
is a long-standing SBC international mission fund. Lottie Moon was
a native of Virginia. Has our Denominational Affairs Committee (DAC)
met to discuss any of these issues, which will affect the future
of RRCB and probably have some impact on any new pastor? According
to Teacher Bob who is a member of the DAC, this committee has not
met and has not set a meeting date.
What is the best course to take? Should RRCB discuss
and settle this issue before a new pastor is called? Hampton Baptist
Church did deal with this issue before calling a new pastor. Hampton
Baptist voted to withdraw from the SBC. In the Richmond community,
PH is aware that Grace Baptist Church and Ginter Park Baptist Church
have withdrawn from the SBC. Keep in mind that the SBC does not
recognize the ordination of women, requires international missionaries
to sign the creedal Baptist Faith and Message, has withdrawn from
the Baptist Joint Committee and is planning to withdraw from the
BWA. Also the SBC has become politically active in regard to many
political issues and has narrowed or clouded the separation of church
and state. The SBC has some carefully worded position statements
on its web page. You may look at these position statements for yourself
at the web page below.

PH is saving his tea bags for a big party.
Attached to this PHA is a
photo of an old house. Does such a photo provoke any poetic
thoughts or fantasies of the lives lived in this house? If you have
such thoughts or fantasies, send an E-mail to PH.
