Vol. 2, # 2, Aug. 8, 2003
Gene Damon is scheduled to continue the Catacombs lectures this
Sunday and next Sunday. When PH last heard from Shepson Gene he
was off camping somewhere, hopefully with Betty. Thus, PH has no
idea what his topic may be. Who knows, it might be the theological
implications involved in the life cycle of the tick. But whatever
the topic, Shepsons would be well advised to be present on Sunday
morning to discover what the real topic may be.
Philip and Shanna Davis hope to start an English speaking church
in Prague in the next year. They are Presbyterian and thankfully
do not have to sign the Baptist Faith and Message. But one never
knows for sure, John Calvin may be lurking. Shepson Kitty sent
PH the following E-mail:
"George and I would like to request prayer for our son Philip
who will be going on a mission trip to Peru beginning Thursday
and lasting until the 17th. The group will be working with homeless
boys. Once Philip told me he would need mosquito netting and that
they would be rafting down the Amazon with their luggage, basically
backpacks, to get to this town, I must confess I told him that
was more than a mother wanted to know. As many of you know Philip
graduated from seminary the end of May and is an assistant minister
in Charlotte, N.C., at Uptown Christ Covenant Church. Philip is
Presbyterian, and we were especially grateful on Thursday evening
when Cecil Sherman said that his daughter, also Presbyterian, will
be in heaven--"but in the balcony." During this next
year Philip and his wife Shanna will be gathering a group of 15
and making plans to go to Prague to start an English-speaking church
for the Americans living there. Evidently there are businesses
in Charlotte who send employees to live/work in Prague for several
years. Philip and Shanna are very interested in establishing a
church where these persons might worship and build relationships/community.
I'm sure this won't be the first time George and I ask for prayer
for our son, his wife, and our granddaughter Lucy in the next few
years. It was a lot easier praying for missionaries when they weren't
your loved ones." Kitty
Words of instruction from SSBSC missionaries Charlotte and Bill:
Please put Sunday, August 17, on your calendar. Our class and
the Discussion Class are responsible for the after-church reception.
We will need your help bringing food (enough of whatever you bring
for 8-10 people) and we will need items like fruit, cheese and
crackers, a dip and veggies, cookies, goodies for the children's
table, etc. Touch base with Charlotte Simpson at 285-3185 for more
information.
Betsy Foster will celebrate twenty-nine years on next Wednesday
and Kay Culpepper will do the same on next Thursday.
Mary and Julian Pentecost will mark fifty-five years of marriage
on this Sunday. This is a goal for many of us to try to attain
and is certainly a wonderful accomplishment
Charlotte and Bill want to remind everyone that
the ISH School Supply Campaign ends on August 15. If you have
not contributed
school supplies or given money to Charlotte and Bill to do the
shopping for you, it is not too late. You can still "touch
base" with Charlotte or Bill at 285-3185.
Brenda and I feel inadequate in finding the words to express our
gratitude for the many cards, e-mails, food gifts, flowers, and
spoken words of sympathy and love that countless numbers of you
have sent our way. My father wanted to be cremated and have his
ashes scattered on his farm near Scottsville. This will be accomplished
later this weekend.
PH learned last week that Carol Royall's aunt Lillian
Rosser died on July 31. Carole stated that her aunt "was
a great lady."
Please remember in your prayers Philip and Shanna Davis, Dot and
Cecil Sherman, Carole Royall and the family of her aunt Lillian
Rosser, John Oliver, Nancy Werner's nephew Doug Baumgardner, Woody
Hasty, Dick Harwood, Beth Wilson's Aunt Florence Booker, Rob James,
young Davis Summers, Helen Davis, Kim Dodson, Chester's parents,
Brenda and Henry Holland, the Manor Bible Study Class, the Church
Staff, the Pastor's Search Committee and those only known to you.
PH will not have any editorial comment with this PHA. This PHA
is devoid of the usual attempt at humor that has been PH's style
in the past. It will return. Other responsibilities have taken
precedence this week. However, for your visual pleasure and some
comic relief, attached to this PHA is a photo of Shepson Brenda
welcoming two unusual characters at our entrance hall. Can you
identify the characters?
