Poor Henry's Almanac--Shepherd-Smison Bible Study Class

# 34, March 21, 2003

A Poor Henry Statement

This edition of PHA will not make any attempt at humor out of respect for the men and woman in uniform and for the civilians in Iraq, all of whom are in peril.

Also since PH rarely completes the editing of PHA until late on Thursday nights, hereafter the publication date of PHA will be on Friday morning.

Easter Basket Mission Project Is Underway

THE BIG GREEN EASTER BASKET MACHINE, INC., headquartered in the Elizabeth B. Wilson Multi-Purpose Municipal Auditorium of River Road Church, Baptist, has sprung to life. The Machine will have 42 Easter buckets available to hand out to class members as of this Sunday morning, with more in the wings if needed. Of that number, 11 have already been taken. Each bucket will come with a cellophane bag and suggestions as to items, which might be included. The campaign will extend through Sunday morning, April 13th. Buckets may be brought to class or left on the table outside the Sunday School office. If you have questions, please call Charlotte and Bill Simpson at 285-3185.

Gracious Letter Received from Lee and Jim Slatton

Jim and Lee Slatton sent a letter of gratitude to the class. The letter reads:

March 12, 2003

Members of the Shepherd Simpson Bible Class
River Road Church Baptist
C/o Dr. Henry Holland a.k.a. Poor Henry
Dear Friends,

I was most deeply touched by your gift of two generous gift store certificates for the purchase of books of our choosing. Your gift was a handsome one and allows me to indulge in one of my favorite activities - browsing, buying, and reading books. We've already put them to use and look forward to some future trips and purchases as well. Thanks for both your thoughtfulness and generosity.

We were also honored to be made members of the class, and look forward to exercising the privileges and responsibilities thereof. Truth to tell, we've already become faithful attendees at class parties and Readers of the Almanac. We are missing all of you very keenly while we are away and trying to get accustomed to our new roles. We are grateful for you; the friendships which we treasure with all of you, and your many kind greetings and expressions during this transition.

Sincerely,

Lee and Jim Slatton

Listening Session with B. J. and David Was Productive

Last Sunday, Pastor Search Committee members B. J. Seymour and David Gulick were good listeners as our class communicated our thoughts on the strengths of our church, challenges facing our church, the hopes and dreams of our church, and our advice to the Pastor Search Committee. At times we tended to briefly digress over such issues as the pros and cons of remaining in the Southern Baptist Convention. Overall the time passed quickly and the subject matter was very valuable.

Youth Sunday Is Upon Us

Since we are all twenty-nine years old we should be able to identify with our youth and be ready to hear what they have to say about their hopes for our church. Try to be on time on Sunday at 9:45 AM in order to give our youth the complete time allotted. Katie Chandler, a student at the University of Virginia, will be our youth pastor. All activities of the church for both Sunday and next Wednesday will be conducted by our youth.

PHA Will Soon Be on RRCB's Web Page

Webmaster Eric Johnson has assured PH that the PHA will soon be on the church's web page, probably in connection to the SSBSC information area. He will add a few appropriate graphics to give PHA a little colonial charm. This should be appropriate for a church, which has eighteenth century architecture. This additional access to PHA should be available soon.

Prayer Rounds

PH received an E-mail from Linda Mears. It reads:

"Dear Henry, We finally got the word that Rick will be having his next surgery on March 31st at 11:00. This is to clip the aneurysm in his left internal carotid artery. We covet your prayers for this and also for our son, who now leaves for Kuwait on the morning of March 23rd." Love, Linda

Charlotte Ladd received essentially good news in regard to her recent MRI. She may eventually require more treatment. Remember in your prayers the Mears family, Charlotte Ladd, Terry Marsh's mother, the Manor Bible Study Class, the Pastor's Search Committee, the church staff, Katie Chandler and those known only to you.

Julia's Tuesday Night Club Is Still Strong

Every Tuesday night at 6 PM at the Shoney's at Broad and Skipwith Julia's Tuesday Night Club continues to meet. The menu is varied ranging from catfish to liver. This weekly gathering is a real treat. New members are always welcome.

Birthdays Next Week

Linda Mears will be twenty-nine on Sunday and Franklin Fowler will reach the same age on next Friday.

Ancient Thoughts

Happy are those who work for peace; God will call them his children (Matthew 5:9)

God loves those who exercise justice (from The Koran)
